Antique French Copper Coal Scuttles

"My job in those early years was to bring in the coal for the fire. Our coal bin was a three-sided box with an open top. Each night I went to the bin and filled the coal buckets with coal. We had two: one for big lumps and one for smaller pieces." -James N. Boblenz

More Burlap Uses...
Good Ol' Burlap

Burlap is a woven cloth created from jute, hemp or flax fibers. These plants are not known for their silky or cottony textures, so the result is a coarse fabric with a large weave pattern and natural beige coloring. Burlap is often used to form storage bags for grains, potatoes and other bulky materials. Burlap bags can be imprinted with rudimentary logos or trademarks to help identify their contents. The actual meaning of the word burlap is a bit of a mystery, but some sources also refer to it as Hessian cloth.
We love the look of this finished tablecloth on this table! The possibilities are endless...

Grandmother's Buttons

Grandmother's Buttons' authentic antique button jewelry was a huge hit and in the early nineties, the company expanded to form GB Collection, which produces replica button jewelry, as well as accessories and collectibles -- all inspired by these tiny fasteners of the past. The creations of both Grandmother's Buttons and GB Collection are sold in more than a thousand boutiques and museum stores across the country, an impressive list which included Lord & Taylor; Fred Segal; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Nordstrom; the Biltmore Estate; Signals; Orvis; J. Jill; and Norm Thompson. The company has also been featured in a host of publications including Victoria, Family Circle, Southern Living, Country Home and Modern Bride.
Amidst all of its success, the company has retained its home base in its beautiful, turn-of-the-century bank building in St. Francisville, Louisiana's historic district. The retail store, set in the bank's lovely, oak-paneled lobby, features a mind-boggling selection of jewelry made from exquisite 19th century buttons, as well as fine antiques, Victoriana and rare and whimsical gifts.

Why Register For Vietri?

VIETRI has created the most beautiful, award-winning Italian handcrafted products in the world for over 25 years. In today’s world, it’s rare to find a company that designs and creates authentic treasures by hand with the same techniques used for centuries by generations of Italian families. In a world of mass-produced goods, VIETRI maintains its vision of celebrating artisan-designed, heritage-inspired handcrafted Italian collections that support the history of artisans in Italy and beyond.
VIETRI offers the most durable dishwasher safe earthenware, with over 15 microwavable collections. Earthenware is a key element in what distinguishes VIETRI tableware. Some tableware manufacturers use stoneware, a type of clay often found in Portugal that is used most often to create solid or plain products, with little room for design and handpainted detail due to the makeup of the clay. VIETRI uses Italian earthenware to create beautiful design and detail on each handcrafted piece. The result is a full catalog of dinnerware and accent tableware collections that are unlike anything on the market, and are the most durable earthenware products on the market.
VIETRI creates timeless and trend-setting Italian designs for your entire home. It’s not just dinnerware! Registering for VIETRI means bringing Italian style to every part of your home, from the table to the kitchen, living room, dining room or garden. Bonne Saint Valentin!

Did you know that Valentine’s Day started in the Italian culture? Centuries ago, Valentine's Day was celebrated in Italy as an open air Spring Festival beneath the trees. People would gather to listen to music, read poetry and stroll through the gardens. These days, couples will celebrate by going out for dinner at pizzerias or ristorantes! In the Italian city of Turin, couples traditionally announced their engagements on Valentine's Day. In Britain and Italy, it was said that the first man an unmarried girl saw on Valentine’s Day, or a man who looked like him, would be the man she would marry within a year. Girls used to wake up before sunrise and stand at the window, waiting to see who their husband would be!It is pretty standard to expect sweets from your sweet on Valentine's day, but in Italy Valentines often exchange Baci Perugina. That sounds much more glamorous than a box of chocolates, doesn't it? Baci Perugina are chocolate covered hazelnuts that have a small slip of paper inside with a romantic quote written in four languages.
French Country Kitchen
Roseanna has been wanting to paint her kitchen and I can't wait to show her this picture of a Jack Arnold kitchen. Cream on the upper cabinets and charcoal on the lower cabinets is what we have talked about doing. How beautiful is this wonderful kitchen!

The French country kitchen represents country living that is uniquely French. Decorating With Transferware

Transferware was first introduced in England during the 1750s. The most common color patterns included blue and white, red and white and brown and white. While original transferware pieces are extremely valuable, 20th-century reproductions are easy to find as well as budget friendly. Decorating with transferware is ideal for shabby chic, romantic country or English cottage decor.
Step 1
Begin by collecting several pieces of transferware in the same color. We have so many different colors and patterns to offer at the shop!
Step 2
Display an entire collection of transferware on a hutch or armoire for a dramatic decorative statement.
Step 3
Pair transferware with toile fabric for an elegant French decor.
Step 4
Use a transferware pitcher as a vase for an elegant, yet informal, centerpiece.
Step 5
Group several transferware plates of the same color but with varying patterns together for a beautiful piece of wall art.
Step 6
Swap out a boring soap dish for a pretty transferware saucer as an unexpected touch in a guest bathroom.
Step 7
Dress up small nooks, such as the space above the kitchen cupboards, with a collection of transferware.

Kingman Turquoise

All of the bright blue turquoise that Rocki Gorman uses is Kingman turquoise. The Mineral Park Mine, in the Cerbat Mountains 14 miles northwest of Kingman, was first mined by Indians centuries before white man came to the area. It is one of the three sites of prehistoric mining localities in the state of Arizona. Mineral Park was the most extensively worked area by the Indians of the three. S.A. “Chuck” Colbaugh found a cache of stone hammers uncovered in ancient trenches and tunnels, when he had the turquoise mining concession in May of 1962. Ithaca Peak and Turquoise Mine (formally called Aztec Mountain or Aztec Peak) are the most famous of the peaks in the area containing turquoise.
Turquoise is found in Arizona, Alabama, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, and Virginia in the United States. During the 1970s, the Bureau of Mines stated, in terms of value, that Turquoise is the most sought after stone in the U.S. mining operations.
Turquoise was the first stone in recorded history of man to be used as a gem according to the Library of Congress. The name Turquoise comes from French describing the stone that came from Turkestan, in Central Asia extending from the Caspian Sea to the Gobi Desert. Turquoise has been found in crypts dating from the First Dynasty in Egypt, more then 7000 years ago. The mines along the southwestern coast of the Sinai Peninsula are thought to be the sources. Deposits in eastern Tibet were reported by Europeans as early as the 16th century, and 14th century in India. Marco Polo reported turquoise in his travels in China. The Aztec Indians of Central America, who had in abundance the most prized ore of all, gold, traveled into our American Southwest to find turquoise. Turquoise was so valued by the Aztecs that they demanded turquoise as a tribute from neighboring states of theirs.

Antiqued Script Linen Fabric

A few months ago I fell in love with an antique Eastlake settee & rocker at an antique store downtown. All that was left were the beautiful carved frames, horsehair stuffing and ancient satin and tattered red velvet fabric...they were fantastic. The Eastlake furniture style as envisioned by its namesake, Charles Lock Eastlake, came about in response to his dislike of the over-the-top Rococo and Renaissance Revival styles popular during the Victorian era.
When I saw this script fabric at the shop I just knew it would not be too fancy but just perfect....the upholsterer put numbers on all of the buttons and words like "mademoiselle" on the arms.
